How to Wash WHITE SLIPCOVERS

For years...
and I mean years...
I dreamed of WHITE Slipcovered furniture!
When Greg and I found out we were moving to Seattle...
I decided to make this dream...a reality!
I decided it was time!
It was time to make one of my dreams come true!
I was finally going to live...
like the people in Coastal Living magazine!
I was finally going to plop down on...
my very own...
WHITE SLIPCOVERED FURNITURE!
We ordered our lovely WHITE sofa and chairs from Pottery Barn...
     which I highly recommend!
...you can find our sofa here...
The furniture arrived on Bainbridge Island...
     before Doogan and I arrived!
When I walked in...to our new home...
and the white slipcovered furniture was waiting on me...
I was in WHITE SLIPCOVER HEAVEN!
What I love the most about WHITE SLIPCOVERS...
     is the FRESH, CRISP look!
To keep this look...
all you have to do is slip off the covers...
     and WASH THEM!
I've had lots of "white slipcover lovers" email me!
They all ask me the same question:
"How do you keep them clean and WHITE?"
Well it is OH so EASY!
EVEN when you discover that a fur-ball..
has pounced up on your WHITE sofa...
with dirty little paws!
I didn't even lose it...
when I saw this!
And this!
Doogan likes to hide his CHEW-EEZ!
Yeah!
On the WHITE sofa!
And I didn't even mind...
when I saw all of this!
Nope!
It didn't bother me at all!
Shhhhh!
Don't tell anyone...
but I'm one of those CRAZY fur-baby LOVERS...
that likes her fur-ball...
to enjoy the comfy sofa!
So...all I have to do...
is un-zip the slipcover...
And take it right off!
While the slipcovers are OFF...
and you have your slipcovered furniture all topsy-turvy...
take a few minutes to vacumn underneath the cushions!
When the slipcovers are off...
And your furniture looks like this...
spray all those little dirty paw prints...
and dingy areas.
Stuff the slipcover in the washing machine...
and add just a bit of clorox ultimate care bleach.
Set the washing machine on a gentle cycle...
and MAKE SURE...
it's set on COLD WATER!
White slipcovers do not like HOT water!
When the cycle is complete...
remove the slipcovers from the washer...
and give em' a good shake...
shaking out as many wrinkles as possible!
Then...
FLUFF dry them in the dryer...
and LAY em'...
allllllll over the place to dry a bit!
When the slipcovers are almost dry...
place them back on the cushions...
just like this.
I usually slip them back on...
right before bed...
that way they're completely dry in the morning!
Now!
Stand back...and gaze in amazement!
There's not a DIRTY (fur-ball) SPOT in sight!
Everything looks so FRESH again!
Just like that!
It's that easy!
Just like that you have a FRESH, CRISP, CLEAN....
     WHITE LOOK!
Oh how I do LOVE a WHITE LOOK!
Since I'm talking about things...
that I just LOVE...
I might as well mention MY LOVE...
of Designer's Guild!
Designer's Guild is a company based out of the United Kindgom!
That's where I fell in love with these pillows...
So there you have it Sweetpeas!
Now you know how I keep the slipcovers WHITE!
Happy Weekend!
xo

  1. WE have THE SAME! The sofa, the slip covers, the paw marks, everything! What I LOVE is that they don't need ironing...something I hate...you can just put them right back on after washing.Mr Boo has to help me squash those cushions back in the covers though...does Greg help you?...and does Doogan get on them with dirty paws right after you've washed them? Bella does!

  2. I love the white for our cottage, and your slip covers are just the best thing since sliced bread! Kiki has the run of the house, I know some people would cringe :-) And she likes to "nest" in the corner of our leather sectional which is perfect OK too :-) Give Doogan a smooch from Kiki! Love the white, and ADORE the pillows! When is the dinner party? You'll be all nice and slim, and ready to eat again!

  3. Teresa, you are my slipcover heroine! I have a similar couch but use a sage green {velvety} slip for the colder months and then switch to an off-white beachy stripe for the summer. You are right, the washing isn't a big deal, but like Bellaboo says, the squishing {or is it SQUASHING?} of the cushions back into the slips is a BIG job, kind of like a little wrestling match! I end up hot and bothered, with down feathers all over the place! But I am always LOVING the new look for the season!
xx P&H PS: We are also a fur-ball on the couch family and wouldn't have it any other way!

  4. I'm with you here! I waited for years for mine also. I had mine made from painters tarps, I washed them several times before having them made. They have lasted almost 10 years now and I still love them. My sofa is my goldens bed at night(I do put a blanket under him so I don't have to wash them everyday). They are the best!
    Enjoy your day!

  5. Funny, when I first started reading this post I was going to ask you......doesn't Doogan get up there with wet/dirty paws? Cullen LOVES to eat his treats on the sofa, and he gets one everytime he comes inside after doing his "business"....and with all this rain....white slipcovers would be covered in paw prints ALL the time.....I would have to throw a blanket over it all the time! LOL

    I LOVE you house Teresa!♥
    Have a FABULOUS weekend!

  8. I've always admired those white slipcovered sofas and chairs in magazines, and I've heard that they are easy to keep clean...but how great that you gave us a step-by-step tutorial.

I would love to live on an island! Except, when I visited an island near Seattle for a wedding a couple of years ago, I had no cell reception. Maybe Bainbridge is better???

  9. You are too much!!! By the way, are we sisters? I also have the white slipcovered sofa from Pottery Barn, as well as the fur balls to gunk it up...and the popcorn under the cushions:-) Next time I wash mine, I'll send a photo of them draped all over the verandah to dry. So funny! They are amazing!!!!! And the sofa...let's just say that I would willingly sleep there, it's so comfy.
Your photos and posts are always hysterical. Thanks for all of your cleansing tips! I went ahead and made a drink to get a taste...it's actually not bad so maybe this will be a hit!

  36. Those are beautiful! I thought for a moment "Wow, she must have no children or pets..." then the next photos came! lol I really want bold colored slipcovers for my couch like red or green (not both, though). But you've made me seriously look at white. I'll have to give my husband a moment of horror and tell him I want white. ;-)

And that last sentence had me laughing!

  37. Hello

I share my love for white slipcovers with you. They always look crisp and clean. I love the old chenille bed throws so I used these for slipcovers. I always find additional ones and have a pretty good collection. I figure for 14.95 per throw I always will have slipcovers.

    Thanks for sharing
